Berlin Half Marathon 2022: Sustainable and Waste-Free – An Innovative Approach

The Berlin Half Marathon is a spectacular event every year, attracting not only thousands of runners but also countless spectators. Anyone who has participated in a marathon or cheered on friends and family has likely noticed the piles of trash left behind on the streets after the race. Disposable cups and plastic bottles often dominate the scene – but does it have to be this way? Is there no better, more sustainable solution? We took on this challenge and attempted to make the Half Marathon on April 3, 2022, more waste-free.

Together with Generali, SCC Events, WWF, and Reinhard Angerer, we developed a concept to make the Berlin Half Marathon more eco-friendly. But what exactly did this look like?

The Vytal Supply Station

At the supply station at kilometer 17.5 on Leipziger Straße, runners encountered a fresh, innovative solution: the Vytal Supply Station. Here, refreshing water was not served in the usual disposable cups but in reusable Vytal Cups made by Koziol. After use, these cups were collected in special bins, cleaned, and prepared for the next event.

The Benefits:

• No Waste: Our reusable cups significantly reduce waste.
• Safety: Even if a cup falls to the ground, there’s no tripping hazard because the cups are made of soft material.
• Sustainability: The cups are not only environmentally friendly but also designed for multiple uses.

The Future is Reusable
